SPOKE is an art space specializing in new contemporary painting, sculpture and illustration with an emphasis in accessible programming. Started in 2010, the gallery now houses two locations, one in San Francisco’s Lower Nob Hill neighborhood and one in New York City’s Lower East Side. Each space rotates monthly exhibits that feature a wide variety of solo and group shows, many of which feature an international roster of represented artists.
For Moniker, SPOKE Art presents the first UK solo show by Erik Jones. Jones was born in 1982, in a sunny beach community in St. Petersburg Florida, receiving a bachelor’s degree from Ringling College of Art and Design in 2007.
Out of college, working primarily in cover illustration, Erik toured the US, showing at different pop culture and art conventions, gradually making his way to Brooklyn, New York, in 2009, where he now resides. Jones now focuses on painting primarily for, but not limited to, galleries.
His work is vibrant and colorful, expressing a heightened sense of realism captured in his female subjects, juxtaposed with sporadic mark making and non-representational forms that could be said to mimic geometric high-end fashion.
This effect is achieved by using multiple mediums such as watercolor, colored pencil, acrylic, water-soluble wax pastel and water-soluble oil on paper.
